25 Mar 2020COVID-19 Temporary Closure

In light of the coronavirus global situation the committee has taken the difficult decision to close the rowing club for all training until further notice. We appreciate that this is disappointing for all concerned, however feel it is the most responsible form of action to take. We have loaned out equipment so people can continue their training. We will continue to monitor the situation and let you know as soon as we feel this situation can change. Thank you for your understanding. Stay safe.

26 Oct 2018Wansbeck LDS and SBH cancelled

 Dear club admins,

After assessing conditions earlier the team are not confident that it
will be possible to marshal all of the crews especially at the end of
the race. That combined with predicted low temperatures on Saturday we
have taken the decision to cancel both Wansbeck LDS & SBH competitions.
We will be in contact early next week regarding arrangements for refunds.

Please pass the message on.

Best Regards

The LDS & SBH teams.
23 Oct 2018Start Order for the Wansbeck SBH

 Hi All,

here is the start order for this weekend's SBH. The forecast is chilly with rain possible so make sure your crews are dressed accordingly for the weather.

We'll endeavour to get you on and off the water as quick as possible, so if you can make sure gates are open, helpers are at hand with blades. Fix blades, push off and fasten your feet out on the water and it will mean everyone is waiting at the start for less !

Good luck to all competing !

As a result of the bad weather we experienced at the JIRR trials the council have forbidden us to use the grass between the clubhouse road and the bridge for parking of cars.  Cars with trailers can still use the grass infront of the clubhouse as normal.  Alternative parking is therefore using the car park on the opposite side of the road, or in the industrial estate up the hill from the rowing club or at the riverside park.

25 May 2016Wansbeck Regatta Final Draw

Another couple of slight changes to the draw.   We had a crew pull out of Nov. 4+  so the remaining crew has been bumped up to IM3. 4+    and Race2 has been put back in to Division 1 as the semi final for this.

We had two IM2.1x scullers from the same club and they requested to move to Eli.1x  . The existing competitors in E.1x and the regatta committee were happy for this to happen so the new merged event has been redrawn and the semi finals will take place in Div 2 and the final in Div 3 to allow for potential doubling up issues.

And finally we had a scratch in W.J13.1x which made the draw lopsided (3 races for some and a bye straight to the final for one) so we've levelled this out.

The final draw therefore is now available.   We will not be making any further changes before the event - and any scratched crews will just need to inform the regatta committee / race control as per usual.

Final draw and tree

24 May 2016Wansbeck Regatta Revised Draw

We have had to make a very slight tweak to the draw in division 1. One of the IM3 4+ crews gained points at Tees regatta so had to be moved up a category. Unfortunately we did not have an IM2 entry so we have made this an invitational event. Race 22 is now the final of the invitational four.

We have had a crew scratch in the mixed double so there is now no Race 2.

23 May 2016Wansbeck Regatta Provisional Draw

We'd like to send out a huge thank you to the regions clubs and Durham Colleges for once again filling up the regatta to capacity.

14 May 2016Wansbeck Regatta 2016

Hello Everyone,

Online entry is now open for Wansbeck Regatta  at Cambois RC.  Now in our seventh year on the best water in the north east we would love to see you all back again this year. Last year's event was quite popular with clubs and Durham colleges alike.    On the basis of if it aint broke - the regatta will follow the same format as previous years. Three seperate divisions meaning you can enter three events without the problems of being timetabled to race at the same time. Prizes of engraved glass tankards for all events.

More info will be posted at

30 Sep 2015Wansbeck LDS and SBH

Thank you for the very large entry at the LDS and SBH events this coming weekend.  Due to safety reasons we have been forced to run the event as follows.

To minimise the length of time boats will be on the water, we will be running the LDS event in two halves. The quads and men’s doubles will be in the first half. This will be boats numbered from 1 to 54. Boating for these will commence at 8.00am sharp with the race start time at 9.30am. All boats will complete the full 3500m course and return to the pontoon.

The second half of the LDS will then commence boating at approximately 11.00am. This will be all remaining doubles and singles. The race start will therefore be around 12.30pm and again all boats will complete the course before returning to the pontoon.

To ensure that racing is completed within the hours of daylight we have had to take the decision to shorten the SBH event to 1800m. Boating of the complete field will start at 2.30pm.   The finish for the sbh event will now be between the road bridge and the rowing club. This will allow boats who have completed the course to land at the pontoon, rather than waiting for the whole race to complete and the ensuing log jam of boats trying to come in.  A revised finish and circulation pattern for landing is attached along with safety instructions and risk assessment.

To help run the day smoothly can we ask that all crews are fully prepared when they start to boat. You have seats in the boat and the blades are beside the landing.

Thanks and have a good row.

05 Nov 2014Wansbeck LDS and SBH - Boating times and Info

Hello All,

Wansbeck LDS and SBH important info.

- Road closure :  The A1 / A19 junction at Seaton Burn will be closed all weekend. If you normally come this way then either come through the tunnel instead on the A19 or if you are coming via the A1 then you can leave at the Gosforth Park turnoff and join the A189 Spine Road.

- Safety : We will have a lot of boats on the water and the weather conditions may be cold and wet ! Please ensure you have adequate clothing for the time of year as you may be sat on the water both before and after your race longer than you would prefer. We will be doing everything we can to minimise this.

- Boating : Due to the very large entry for the Wansbeck LDS and SBH and the logistical challenges we have in relation to where our pontoon sits mid-course, we intend on running the morning's LDS event in two groups.

Boat numbers 1 to 49 in the LDS will boat in race order commencing at 8.30 (or sooner if you are ready) for a 9.30am race start. So starting at boat #1 we will boat all the quads down through the men's doubles to boat #49. Please make your way downstream to the start as soon as you have boated.

Note due to our limited pontoon space we would ask that people try and clear the landing as soon as possible. This means having your gates open before you carry your boat down, having your blades available straight away and sorting your feet out on the water (for the larger boats). We WILL be trying to get boats to fasten gates and push off !

When these 49 boats have raced they will return to the pontoon and we will endeavour to land these as quickly as possible, although it may be necessary to hold boats on the stakeford bank opposite the pontoon while the next group is boating. Please inform your crews to follow any marshall's instruction.

Boat numbers 50 to 148  will boat starting at 10.30  for a 11.30am start.  Again these will be boated in race order and make your way to the start as soon as you are boated.

We aim to start boating all boats for the SBH at 1pm with an expected start time of around 2.30pm

26 May 2014Regatta 2014

The final draw for our regatta is now available. We have made a slight revision to the provisional draw to accommodate a four in the first division that had no opposition, now split into two doubles. The new to sport J14 event is now moved to the end of division 2.   In the third division we have moved the mixed eights event earlier due to a clash with a crew that was bumped divisions. Otherwise times are unaffected.

Thanks for the tremendous support in our largest ever entry. See you all at the weekend

25 Jun 2013Wansbeck Regatta 2013

as our regatta is all done and dusted we hope everyone had a good time at Cambois RC this weekend and I didn't bore too many people with my droning on. Our regatta committee are having a wrap-up meeting later this week so please feel free to feedback any comments, good or bad so that we can improve for next year.

We'd also like to take this time to send our thanks out to a few people.

The region's clubs supported us brilliantly with some fantastic large entries. It was also nice to see Butler College make the trip from Durham, especially since their term is finished now and the majority of students will be going home.

Charlie and all the umpires helped us run a smooth event despite the tricky gusts of wind and occasional splash of rain.

We'd also like to thank our main sponsor Browell Smith and Co and all others who had sponsored races. Your contributions make a massive difference to our ability to stage the event with confidence.

The St John's first aid were called upon a couple of times and together with the safety boat assistance from the Sea Cadets without either we could not hold a safe event.

And lastly thanks to all the members, parents and helpers from Cambois RC who chipped in their support.

Hope to see you all next year.

18 May 2013a soggy but successful day at Tees

I think Stockton has a monsoon season and it usually coincides with any rowing events. After the glorious sunshine of 2012 it reverted to type and started off with very heavy rain in the morning.

Racing in divisions, anyone unlucky enough to have events in division 1 were guaranteed to stay wet for the rest of the day. Gav and Ethan got through three rounds and finished 3rd in their double. The highlights were Andie in her single and Nats and Kennedy in the double. They both rowed well in their semi-finals, saving energy knowing the top two would go through and then blasted the final. Great wins !

The rain started to ease up around lunchtime and the conditions were very nice for rowing, flat water and light breeze. Craig had a productive afternoon, winning his two straight finals in the Masters single and then the IM1 quad. Paul and Julian signed off to go to the Masters Championships at Nottingham with a comfortable win in the double.

The twins had two decent outings in a composite quad with Chester-Le-Street, then coming a creditable second in the double. All valuable experience.

The J15 quad had a fantastic race against their old rivals from Tyne. The boys were about quarter of a length up at the Infinity bridge. Both crews lifted the rate and pushed for the finish, neck and neck. Across the line it was too close to call. We held our breaths for the result, but it came as a win for Tyne by 2 feet.

Rower(s) of the day : I've picked two crews today. Both of whom showed exactly how to race regattas, by saving energy and using it when it counts in the final. After Durham's capsize in the single Andie Riches, and in only their second race together Natalie Dixon and Kennedy Tait. Well done girls !

12 May 2013the wins keep coming at Durham City

After a good and hectic day at Durham City on Saturday the pace slowed a little for the Sunday event. The racing was just as exciting to watch nevertheless.

The highlight of the first division time trial over the long course was a win and fastest double of the day  for Jamie and Nathan in the Elite 2x.  Only a few seconds off being the fastest boat overall.

The J15 lads then took over the starring role in the afteroon. Daniel and Cameron faced two strong senior rowers in the novice double. A fast start saw them put the older crew under pressure and pull out a half length lead. A half crab from the Durham crew gave the boys clear water, but not enough to break the elastic. With both crews pulling hard they collided on the finish line in our lane but Dan and Cameron had held on to win a hard fought race.

Kieran was next to race. After getting through two rounds well on Saturday to get to the semi-final of the J15 single he had a straight final in the Novice 1x.  His usual blistering start put him up over a very competent sculler from Hatfield College. He couldn't hold the lead though and lost by 'inches' on the line. A great effort.

The last race of the day was the J15 quad of Dan, Cameron, Gav and Ethan with Aidan coxing. Cambois powered away from the start and continued to stretch out a lead over a decent Doncaster Schools quad. The venerable commentator who has seen many a good race at Durham was rightly very complimentary towards both crews who sculled very well indeed. Aidan got a mention too for his 'impeccable' course.

Rower(s) of the day : A hard one to single anyone out individually as the whole J15 squad were excellent, but losing novice is a big achievment for any rower and so Daniel Jamieson and Cameron Irvine are today's winners.

Photos of the day

11 May 2013Durham City saturday delights

After a miserable 2012 where most of the events at Durham were cancelled due to the weather, the 2 days of Durham City Regatta brought some fine results for Cambois crews.

There was a fine win in the IM2 eight which held off two strong Durham crews to collect some long overdue pots. Nice to see some recognition for the hard work they put in over the winter.

Amongst the ladies, Andie had an eventful day - winning the womens J18 double then falling in at the start of her novice single in some testing conditions later in the day !  Andie shared the win in the double with Lauren who won the J18 single as well and also combined with three girls from Chester-Le-Street and were runners up in the IM2 quad.

Natalie and Kennedy started their first race in the double in what was Kennedy's first regatta. A close result against another local crew means there should be some good races coming up this season.

The smiles on the girl's faces heading back to the pontoon was great to see as Zoe, Megan, Callie and Bethan and Matty won their semi-final in the quad, only to lose out to a tidy Tarn crew in the final.

The race of the day had to be the final of the novice double. Winning through on each side of the draw, Matty and Wim came up against Gav and Ethan in the final.   The younger lads used their fast start to pull out a half length lead but the extra power and weight into a strong headwind allowed Matty and Wim to overhaul them in the middle of the course. The two J15 boys weren't letting them have it though and put in a burst to the finish line. A distance of half a canvas in the end was all that seperated them. Matty had earlier won two races to win the Novice single and took home an extra pot for the double just to make sure.

Rower(s) of the day : On any other day I think Melissa would have won this for a very brave effort in quite nasty conditions for a single. Winning her first race before battling all the way up the course to only lose by a length or so. Also Lauren had a great day with two wins, but the rower of the day award goes to Matthew Nichol. Winning novice with style twice in one day .

Competition is getting harder each year but Natalie won by only two metres, with only seven metres covering the top three places! A fantastic result in a very gruelling event. Well done Natalie !

Kasey Jobling also just missed out on a medal, coming fourth in the girl's J15 category. So unlucky.

Congratulations to you both for again doing the club proud.

29 Sep 2011Wansbeck LDS, SBH Revised Draw and Instructions

The draw for the Wansbeck Small Boats Head 2011 version 2 is below. A very minor change to sneak one extra single in for a tardy entrant, plus one scratched single.

Revised draw

Unfortunately the council has not drained the river for us this year so we are unable due to safety concerns (submerged hazards towards the river mouth) to run the full distance. The course therefore will be around 3000 metres long.

We will be starting boating for the LDS at 9.30am for an 11am start. Boating for the SBH will be 12.30pm for a 2pm start. Please check the competitor's instructions and map of the course.

12 Oct 2009Norman Howitt

We are very sorry to announce that Norman Howitt, the Club's President, passed away on Monday 12th October at the end of a very brief stay in hospital. He had spent the Sunday morning at the Club as usual, helping members young and old. Norman's rowing career with Cambois Rowing Club was lifelong, and he served as an umpire in the region. For many newcomers to the Club and to the sport, of all ages, Norman's was the friendly face that particularly made them feel welcome while they were settling in. He will be greatly missed.
